AngularJS is a popular front-end JavaScript framework known for its powerful capabilities in building dynamic and interactive web applications. When paired with a suitable backend framework, it can form a robust full-stack solution.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the best backend frameworks that seamlessly integrate with AngularJS, providing a solid foundation for your web development projects.

Best Backend for AngularJS

There are many situations in which we may wonder what’s the best backend for AngularJS. The answer is tricky, and it depends on the priorities of a developer or an application that we are trying to build.

Before making the final decision, some factors need to be considered, such as RESTful API’s server-side implementations, database support, and security.

Below are some of the best backend languages or frameworks related to these languages that can be used, in our opinion. The pros and cons of these languages are explained in detail below.

PHP as Backend for AngularJS

PHP is a widely used server-side scripting language known for its simplicity, versatility, and compatibility with various databases. When paired with AngularJS, a robust front-end framework, you can create interactive and data-driven web applications.

If we take RESTful API’s implementation in PHP, Vanilla PHP, and CodeIgniter can implement it, but they are poorer than the other languages, Ruby and Node.js. So, if we are looking to develop a website that contains or is mostly based on RESTful API, then the suggestion will be to avoid PHP as a backend.

For frameworks like Symfony and some other ORM-based frameworks, we have no experience in them, so we cannot give any arguments related to them. And for the CMS-based applications or frameworks such as WordPress and Drupal are very slow and are not made for custom applications.

But let’s talk about Laravel as a backend for AngularJS applications. We can use it because the learning curve for Laravel is reasonably low, and we can easily implement the RESTful APIs.

If we look at Database support by PHP and Vanilla PHP, MySQL support for databases can work. However, it is still a low-level database to use for big applications.

But CodeIgniter, Symfony, Laravel, and other frameworks provide support for multiple databases, and they all offer the necessary abstraction and security for working with the database to varying degrees.

There may be some databases in which these frameworks can struggle, such as NoSQL or newer databases.

If we look at the security, PHP and Vanilla PHP are not recommended because they provide very little security. But PHP frameworks such as CodeIgniter, Laravel, and the other frameworks offer protection with string-escaping and protection against SQL injection attacks.

Node.js With Express.js as Backend for AngularJS

Node.js, a JavaScript runtime paired with Express.js, a minimalist web application framework, offers an excellent combination for building efficient and scalable server-side applications. The asynchronous nature of Node.js aligns well with the non-blocking nature of AngularJS, making it a popular choice for full-stack development.

Pros:

  • Single Language Stack: Both AngularJS and Node.js use JavaScript, which promotes code consistency and seamless integration.
  • Performance Optimization: Node.js’s non-blocking I/O operations allow for high concurrency, making it suitable for handling a large number of requests.

Cons:

  • Complexity for Large-scale Applications: For large-scale applications with complex business logic, managing callbacks and asynchronous code can be challenging.
  • CPU-bound Tasks: Node.js is not suitable for CPU-intensive tasks due to its single-threaded nature.

If we look at the database support of Node.js, Express.js supports all major forms of databases with appropriate middleware. Express.js also provides many options from the NPM repositories.

But we will have to wire them the Express.js ourselves with varying difficulty. The only or most important drawback of using Node.js as a backend is that it doesn’t offer too much security, but it can be hardened with the modules.

Ruby on Rails as a Backend for AngularJS

Ruby on Rails, commonly referred to as Rails, is a web application framework for the Ruby programming language. It emphasizes convention over configuration, allowing for rapid development and clean code.

If we look at the RESTful implementation support by RoR, it offers good implementation support. Rails offer both security and ease of use for the database.

It provides support for popular databases. RoR is not good for integrating with the NoSQL database.

If we look at the security provided by the RoR, it provides basic security from SQL Injection through Active Record and CSRF protection.

Pros:
